Sonnet on the Final Hour

Vinicius de Moraes Saravá,
Gedichte und Lieder,
Serie Piper, 1989

It will be like this, dear friend — one day
we’ll be watching the sunset
when we suddenly feel on our faces
a light kiss of cold air.

You’ll look at me silently
and I’ll do the same,  remembering….
then dazzled with poetry, we’ll pass through
the door open before us, to the darkness.

Crossing the border of the Secret
I will softly say, “Don’t be afraid”
And you will say, “Be strong”.

And like two ancient lovers
mournfully entwined in the night
together we’ll enter the gardens of death.

Soneto da Hora Final

Será assim, amiga: um certo dia
Estando nós a contemplar o poente
Sentiremos no sosto, de repente,
O beijo leve de um aragem fria.

Tu me olharás silenciosamente
E eu te olharei também, com nostalgia
E partiremos, tonto de poesia
Para a porta de treva aberta em frente.

Ao transpor as frontiers do Segredo
Eu, calmo, te direi: — Não tenhas medo
E tu, tranqüilá, me dirás:- Sê forte.

E como dois antigos namarados
Noturnamente tristes e enlaçados
Nós entraremos nos jardins da morte.

  1. I’m a little confused about the bibliography — does the German book contain a poem in Portuguese or a German translation? Or is it bilingual? (if either of the latter two, will you show us the German?)

  2. Portuguese at the “more”. The German book is bilingual.
